"Our theater of war will be the Pacific."
He remembered the feeling that ran through him as he heard those words. Pride. Determination. A tiny tingle of fear. He was going to do his part, to join his brothers fighting overseas; fighting for a way of life, for freedom, for God and Country. He never thought about the pain, the frailty of life. One quick second, a flash of gunfire, and everything changed.
Alone, he lay dying in the jungle; his only company the sounds of bullets, of grenades. He had saved a life, but lost his own in return.
