“You can’t!” Carl cried, wrapping himself in a ball around Rick’s leg. “What if you don’t come back?”
Rick sighed, running his fingers through his hair as he crouched down to pick Carl up. His son had been through so much in the past few weeks. After the fiasco at the CDC, the group had been somewhat shell-shocked. He knew that the others blamed him for their losses there; not just the physical loss of their friend Jacqui, but their losses as far as gas, clothing, equipment. They were lucky to get out with what they had. There simply hadn’t been time or opportunity to go back for the rest of their possessions.
Carl had never been a whiny child; in fact, Rick had often wondered at his and Lori’s good fortune in having such a sweet, quiet baby. However, since the blast at the CDC, Carl had been clingy and whiny, refusing to leave his father’s side for more than a few minutes at a time. Rick was sure that Carl was just feeling the tension from the rest of the group. Hell, Rick was feeling the tension himself.
“Carl, come on now. We have to go look for supplies, you know that. It’s just too dangerous for me to take you with me. If we run into walkers, I can move better, faster, if I don’t have to worry about what’s happening to you. You understand, right?”
Carl shook his head, tears in his eyes. Rick pulled his son into a hug, holding him tight and trying to think of the right words to say.
“Carl, look at me.”
Carl reluctantly looked at his dad, knowing what was coming and clueless as to how to convince his dad to stay with him and his mom. Something wasn’t right with his mom, Carl could feel it. Something wasn’t right with Uncle Shane either. Carl was afraid that, if his dad left, something bad would happen. What, he didn’t know. He just knew he’d had enough bad to last him for the rest of his life.
“Carl, I need to go. Glenn and I have to go find supplies. We’re down to nothing here and we have to eat.” Sighing again, Rick sat down on the ground, pulling Carl into his lap with him. “I have to make up for what happened back there, Carl. Can you understand that? It was MY idea to go to the CDC. MY fault that we lost Jacqui. MY fault that we're down to two running vehicles and no food. I have to do something to make it right. Please understand."
Carl looked at his dad and sighed, nodding his head. "Please, Dad, be careful. Mom and I need you to come back."
Rick nodded and kissed Carl's forehead.
"I will. I'll be back before you know it. You look after your Mom for me, ok? Keep her safe."
