This is not at all what I had in mind originally but it hit me and I decided to run with it.

"Our theater of war will be the Pacific."
He remembered the feeling that ran through him as he heard those words. Pride. Determination. A tiny tingle of fear. He was going to do his part, to join his brothers fighting overseas; fighting for a way of life, for freedom, for God and Country. He never thought about the pain, the frailty of life. One quick second, a flash of gunfire, and everything changed.
Alone, he lay dying in the jungle; his only company the sounds of bullets, of grenades. He had saved a life, but lost his own in return.

Don't ask me where this came from - I haven't the foggiest idea. *shrug*

We fought hard, against what seemed like impossible odds. Every time one of the enemy fell, three more sprang up to take its place. On and on, the battle raged through the evening and into the night. Through it all, he stood by me, back to back, protecting me even as I defended him.

I don't remember being hit, or slumping to the ground, or the pain. All I remember is that, as I fought my way through the haze to wake up, I could feel his arms around me, strong and solid and real. "We made it," he whispered.

100 Word Drabble Contest #27
Prompt: Memory

* * * * *

"You have to help me! I can't bear to remember this!" The young woman dropped to her knees, clutching the hem of my skirts, franticly attempting to keep me from walking away.

I bent down, took her chin in my hand, and looked into her tear-filled eyes. "Why, child? Why are you so desperate to forget? You are young yet; memories fade with time. Mayhap the lesson learned is one best left in your mind and heart."

I pulled my skirts from her hands and walked away, not looking back though her wails began to echo through the streets.

The others walked away, presumably to leave her to say her goodbyes and mourn in peace. She was grateful for the distance, and for the fact that they took her daughter with them. She didn't want Sophia to hear what she had to say.

She crouched down next to the grave, her voice low and even. No tears, not for him.
"You were a horrible husband, a lousy father, and a sorry excuse for a human being. Still, you didn't deserve this. I ... I forgive you for what you did."

She stood to leave, her words bitter on her tongue.

"Would you please just stop? If you just jam it in there like that, you're going to break it! And then what will we do?

"Could you shut up? I know what I'm doing!"

"Oh yeah? Could've fooled me!"

"Seriously, I don't need your help but here. If you think you're so damn smart, you do it. Go ahead. Enlighten me in the ways of the master, oh mighty one!"

"You're an ass, you know that?"

"That hurts. Coming from you, that really wounds me. I think I'll go sit and cry now."

"I think I broke it."

“You can’t!” Carl cried, wrapping himself in a ball around Rick’s leg. “What if you don’t come back?”

Rick sighed, running his fingers through his hair as he crouched down to pick Carl up. His son had been through so much in the past few weeks. After the fiasco at the CDC, the group had been somewhat shell-shocked. He knew that the others blamed him for their losses there; not just the physical loss of their friend Jacqui, but their losses as far as gas, clothing, equipment. They were lucky to get out with what they had. There simply hadn’t been time or opportunity to go back for the rest of their possessions.

Carl had never been a whiny child; in fact, Rick had often wondered at his and Lori’s good fortune in having such a sweet, quiet baby. However, since the blast at the CDC, Carl had been clingy and whiny, refusing to leave his father’s side for more than a few minutes at a time. Rick was sure that Carl was just feeling the tension from the rest of the group. Hell, Rick was feeling the tension himself.

“Carl, come on now. We have to go look for supplies, you know that. It’s just too dangerous for me to take you with me. If we run into walkers, I can move better, faster, if I don’t have to worry about what’s happening to you. You understand, right?”

Carl shook his head, tears in his eyes. Rick pulled his son into a hug, holding him tight and trying to think of the right words to say.

“Carl, look at me.”

Carl reluctantly looked at his dad, knowing what was coming and clueless as to how to convince his dad to stay with him and his mom. Something wasn’t right with his mom, Carl could feel it. Something wasn’t right with Uncle Shane either. Carl was afraid that, if his dad left, something bad would happen. What, he didn’t know. He just knew he’d had enough bad to last him for the rest of his life.

“Carl, I need to go. Glenn and I have to go find supplies. We’re down to nothing here and we have to eat.” Sighing again, Rick sat down on the ground, pulling Carl into his lap with him. “I have to make up for what happened back there, Carl. Can you understand that? It was MY idea to go to the CDC. MY fault that we lost Jacqui. MY fault that we're down to two running vehicles and no food. I have to do something to make it right. Please understand."

Carl looked at his dad and sighed, nodding his head. "Please, Dad, be careful. Mom and I need you to come back."

Rick nodded and kissed Carl's forehead.

"I will. I'll be back before you know it. You look after your Mom for me, ok? Keep her safe."

I warn you now - this is complete and utter silliness but it is the first thing that popped in my head when I saw the prompt. I hope you at least get a chuckle out of it, whether you vote for it or not.
